Here we go; the first Liberton Times. It’s a place to find a little bit of history, trivia, jokes, household tips, the occasional recipe, a classified ad or two, and some important information concerning our co-operative. If you’d like to be part the next one, we’d love to have you do just that. Feel free to drop off any ideas in the mailbox at Unit 3!
History of Liberton Terrace The co-operative was founded in 1986. The project began with an interest survey and the assistance of the various levels of government and the community. Liberton Terrace Housing Co-operative Ltd. was incorporated on July 1, 1986 and construction began in 1987. Members had input into the design and development of the co-operative and in the development of a community within a community here in the heart of St. Albert. Liberton Terrace has 43 units with 50% that are subsided and 7 wheelchair assessable units.
Did you know? In 1999 there were over 2,000 housing co-ops in Canada with 111,000 members and combined assets of nearly $5.6 billion.
Thank You: On a typical mid-winter day in St. Albert, there is about 27 centimeters of snow on the ground. Many of us would say there has been considerably more snow this year. I’m thankful that our parking lot has been cleaned as often as it has.
Words of wisdom: People who are struggling with their weight should decide that they will never get down to their original weight and be ok with it. After all….7lbs 6 ozs. is just not realistic!!!!
Joke: Two blondes were going up and down the street – one was digging a hole and the other one was filling it up. They went up and down a few streets doing this. An elderly gentleman was sitting on his porch in a rocking chair and finally called them over. He said, “I have been watching you girls work so hard but I don’t understand what you are doing.” One of the blondes replied, “Usually we’re a team of three but the girl that plants the trees called in sick!”
Household Tips Easy Drain De-Clogger – drop in 3 or 4 denture cleansing tablets, then pour in 1 cup of white vinegar. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then flush with lots of hot tap water – the carbonated cleaning action will get your drain flowing smoothly.
Changing your furnace filter every three months will help the furnace run better and it will save you money in energy costs.
Reminder The time springs forward March 8, 2015. It’s also is a good time to change batteries in non-hard wired smoke alarms. It is required to have one alarm on each level of your home. It is also recommended to have one in each bedroom, battery operated.

Recipe: Chantelle’s Plum Cake
¼ cup of Margarine
¾ cup of white sugar
2 eggs separated
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon of salt
One can of plums or frozen. Fresh do not work
Topping
½ cups of brown sugar
1 tablespoon of margarine
2 teaspoons of cinnamon
½ teaspoons of cloves or nutmeg.
Cream first 3 ingredients. In separate bowl, whip egg whites to soft peaks and set aside. Mix dry ingredients and pour into creamed mixture and pour in milk. Then fold in egg whites Pour mixture into a 9 inch spring pan lined with parchment paper. Mix brown sugar, margarine and spices. Place plums on cake and cover with topping. Bake at 375 F for one hour.

Meetings The Maintenance meeting for this month has been moved to Wednesday, March 4/15 and schedule for 2015 meetings will be given at the meeting in unit 16. Membership is held the second Monday of the month in unit 23 see you March 9/15. Board meetings happen every third Wednesday of the month in unit 2.
The next GM meeting will be April 13, 2015 at VJM at 7:00 PM to approve the 2015-2016 budget. It is very important that we have a quorum for voting approval. Thank-you for the excellent turn out of members at the February General Meeting.
